Conference Speaker Bios
Kiet Bang is the Library Assistant for the Population Research Institute (PRI) at Penn State. He handles the day to day operations of the PRI Library. Bang received his B.S. in Biochemistry with a minor in Asian American Studies from the University of California at Davis. Prior to joining the staff of the Population Research Institute in 2001, he was a Serials Cataloger and Student Supervisor for the Government Documents Department at the University of California at Davis Library.
Dr. Clara M. Chu, an Associate Professor at the Department of Information Studies, UCLA, specializes in the social construction of information systems, institutions, and access in order to understand the usage of and barriers to information in multicultural communities. Her other interests include Research Methodology, Crosscultural Communication, Education for Multicultural Library and Information Science, and International and Comparative Information Services. She is recipient of the 2002 ALA Equality Award and was selected a 2005 Library Journal Mover & Shaker, which recognizes people who are shaping the future of libraries.
Julia Cleaver earned her MLS at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has been at Ipas in Chapel Hill, NC for the last five years. As manager of Information Services and the Resource Center, Julia serves as an actual and virtual librarian for a staff of 150 located in 12 offices worldwide, as well as numerous telecommuters and consultants. Julia joined APLIC-I in 1996 when she was the librarian for Intrah (now IntraHealth) and has served on the board for much of that time.
Jennifer Darragh is the Data Archivist for the Population Research Institute (PRI), a demographic research unit at Penn State. She manages a large collection of demographic secondary data housed on PRI’s UNIX and Windows Networks. In addition to APLIC-I, she is an active member of the International Association for Social Science and Information Service & Technology (IASSIST), and a student member of SLA, ALA, and ACRL.
Darragh received a B.A. in Psychology from Westminster College (PA) and will graduate in April 2006 with an MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to joining the staff of the Population Research Institute, she was a research specialist for a longitudinal survey project out of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) / Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC).
Lisa Jenschke Stephens is the Information Core Director for the University of Washington Center for Studies in Demography and Ecology. Lisa and her staff (Web Specialist Cynthia Long and Information Specialist Aaron Bowen) work together to facilitate and publicize population research at the University and in the Pacific Northwest. Lisa’s education background is in Comparative Literature (BA University of Pennsylvania, Germanic Languages (MA Ohio State University), Near Eastern, Judaic, and Hellenic Languages (MA Ohio State University), and Modern Languages (Dphil studies Oxford University). She has studied abroad in Germany and the United Kingdom. In addition, Lisa has two daughters who keep her very busy when she’s not at work.
Tara E. Murray is the Information Core Director for the Population Research Institute (PRI) at Penn State. She manages the library and data archive for PRI, a research center supported by the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). She is vice president of APLIC-I and a past president of the SLA Central Pennsylvania Chapter. Murray received her MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh and her B.A. with a concentration in German Studies from Bard College. Prior to joining the staff of the Population Research Institute, she was the library director for the Carnegie Library of Homestead in Munhall, Pennsylvania and a reference librarian at Duquesne University. She also publishes a blog, DIY Librarian.
Jennifer Nadeau has been crafting and implementing print, electronic and
in-person communications strategies related to U.S. and international
sexual and reproductive health at the Guttmacher Institute for six
years. Most recently, she coauthored the Institute’s report, Adding it
Up: Investing in Sexual and Reproductive Health. She has taken the lead
in developing innovative approaches to communicating research findings
to general audiences, including a series of training workshops to help
researchers, advocates and journalists better talk to one another.
Jennifer joined Guttmacher as a marketing associate in March 2000 and,
in 2003, was named Director of Communications. Prior to joining
Guttmacher, she was managing editor of The Nonproliferation Review at
the Monterey Institute of International Studies. She holds a Ph.D. in
International Relations from American University and has worked, studied
and traveled in several African countries.
Susan Pasquariella is Chief of the Knowledge Networks and Assets Development Section, Strategic Planning Office, UN Population Fund (UNFPA). Since 2001, she has also been Manager of the Development Gateway Population and Reproductive Health (POP/RH) Portal. From 1993 to 2001, Dr. Pasquariella was Global Coordinator of the United Nations Population Information Network (POPIN). POPIN’s contributions to the population community included establishment of the first Internet site of population information resources, creation of the first electronic directory of population institutions and electronic publication of the first multi-lingual dictionary of demographic and reproductive health terminology. Prior to 1993, Dr. Pasquariella was Head Librarian of Columbia University’s Center for Population and Family Health (CPFH). She has written extensively on population information availability, accessibility and dissemination in an electronic context. She holds Doctoral and Master’s degrees in Library and Information Science from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Skidmore College.
Nykia M. Perez is currently the President and will soon be Past-President of APLIC-I and has been a member of APLIC-I since 2001. She is the Librarian, Webmaster, and Information & Dissemination Specialist for the University of Pennsylvania’s National Institute for Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) funded Population Studies Center (PSC) in Philadelphia. Before joining the staff of the PSC she was an Information Professional Intern at Lucent Technologies’ Bell Laboratories in New Jersey. Perez received her MLS degree from SUNY Buffalo in 2000 and her BFA with a concentration in Sociology from Rochester Institute of Technology in 1998. She has been working in libraries for over 10 years.
Susan Starr is Director of the Biomedical Library and Associate University Librarian for the Sciences and Scholarly Communication at UCSD, a position she has held since 1998. Susan has a Ph.D. in Psychology from Boston University and an Masters of Library Sciences from UC Berkeley. In her 25 year career at the UCSD Libraries she has served in a variety of positions at the SIO Library, the Biomedical Library, the Science and Engineering Library and in Government Documents. She was also part of the team that founded the California Digital Library. In her current position, in addition to managing the Biomedical Library, she serves as one of the 6 members of the UCSD libraries’ senior management group and provides leadership and broad management support for the 4 UCSD science libraries and for librarywide scholarly communication issues. Susan co-Chairs the University of California’s Scholarly Communication Officers group, which provides direction and oversight for UC Libraries in the area of scholarly communication.
Claire Twose has been the Health Research and Practice Librarian for Welch Medical Library since fall of 2003. In this position Claire is currently responsible for liaison services to seven departments in the Schools of Public Health, Medicine, and Johns Hopkins Hospital. She coordinates an outreach project providing training and information need and usage assessments for selected participants in two Maryland County Public Health Departments. She earned her MLS at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro.
