World Day for Water 2000

The theme selected for this year is “Water for the Twenty-first Century” and focuses on the challenges to be faced by humanity in water resources development and management in the coming century. This theme was selected to complement and enhance the efforts and impacts of the World Water Vision exercise and the 2nd World Water Forum to be held in The Hague (Netherlands) from March 17-22, 2000. In order to raise public awareness of water issues, UNESCO will, on this day, promote water-related activities and events organised by associations and groups focussing on water issues from across the world. It presents data on changes in income inequality over the period 1950-98, with a particular focus on the period since 1980 for 149 countries (developed, developing, and transition countries). The WWW browsing version is currently limited to country level times-series of Gini Coefficients, with an assessment of the data's reliability. A downloadable version is also available.
