Our Annual Conference

Each year APLIC-I holds a conference in concert with the Population Association of America, a professional group for demographers. APLIC-I conference sessions focus on current issues in communication, information, and resource technology and management. The conferences, held in March or April in a North American city, have drawn participants from over one hundred organizations and agencies.

Our Materials

APLIC-I publishes a newsletter, the APLICommunicator, three times annually. APLIC-I also supports the APLIC-I listserv and the Duplicates Program listserv to facilitate communication and resource sharing among the Association’s members.

Our Duplicate Materials Exchange Program

Purpose: The Duplicate Materials Exchange Program (or DUPS) was established in 1978 to redistribute underutilized and/or duplicate materials among members. In 1997, APLIC-I established an electronic forum, using listserv technology to further promote and facilitate the exchange of resources.

How it works: Any APLIC-I member may subscribe to the DUPS Listserv. (Members without access to email may request hard copies mailings of duplicates announcements). Listed publications are intended to benefit institutional, library, or resource center collections, and are not intended for individual use. Materials distributed through the Duplicates Program are usually donated by APLIC-I members, although donations are accepted from outside sources. Requests for duplicate materials are reviewed and processed by the donating agency, with special consideration given to colleagues in developing nations.

Governance

The Association’s Board of Directors meets twice a year to establish guidelines, make policy decisions, and plan activities and events. Directors have a three year term of office and officers serve for one year. The Board of Directors of the corporation shall be its governing body.

History

APLIC-I was formed in 1968 with a grant from the Population Council, under the auspices of the Carolina Population Center. Fifteen population and reproductive health information specialists, librarians, and documentalists met to identify common aims and challenges, promote cooperation, and develop shared systems and tools. For over two decades, APLIC-I has served as a valuable network for ideas and materials exchange.
